Brownhills romance scam victim’s fight to recover £113k life savings she gave to fraudster

A woman who lost almost £113,000 when she fell victim to an elaborate romance scam now faces bankruptcy as banks will not reimburse the money.

Rachel Elwell was befriended on a dating site by a cruel trickster who made her think he was “an open and genuine guy” before duping her out of her hard-earned cash.

He used fake documents and pictures to convince her his life was on the line as he’d been ‘taken captive by loan sharks in Ukraine’, where he was ‘working’.

When his lies were unveiled by Border Force officials, Rachel, from Brownhills, thought she would be entitled to a refund under the terms of the Contingent Reimbursement Model, which supports victims of fraud, the BBC reports.

But after a lengthy investigation, HSBC and Santander have told her she is not entitled to a refund.
