This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anybody in South Korea, or to anyone who has been paying attention to BTS’s incredible rise from K-pop favorites to global superstars, but fans of the band have yet another reason to celebrate now that 2021 has begun.

BTS’s album Map of the Soul: 7 has officially been named the bestselling album of 2020 in South Korea, and it wasn’t a close race at all. In fact, by the end of the year, the septet was only competing with another project they released not long ago…and they still managed to outsell themselves by a massive margin.

According to data supplied by Hanteo (which tracks music sales in South Korea) to the Manila Bulletin, Map of the Soul: 7 sold an eye-popping 3,839,242 copies throughout the year. That sum is the most impressive of all time in a single year.

The second-bestselling album of the year in South Korea was another set dropped by BTS, as they remain far and away the most successful musical act in the country. The band’s BE ends up at No. 2 on the list of the bestselling titles of 2020 with 2,343,709 copies sold, which means that Map of the Soul: 7 beat the more recent BTS drop by just under a million and a half copies (1,495,533, to be exact).

To put that lead into perspective, think of it this way: The number of copies that separate Map of the Soul: 7 from BE, the top two bestselling albums from one another, is greater than the number of units the third bestselling album of 2020 in South Korea managed to rack up.

It isn’t surprising that BTS ended up atop the year-end list of the bestselling albums in South Korea, but the numbers they wrap 2020 with are astounding. No matter how one looks at the numbers (or what data one focuses on, as South Korean fans sometimes rely more on Gaon figures, which track shipments instead of proper sales), Map of the Soul: 7 was by far the most popular effort of 2020 in the country.

Map of the Soul: 7 was released in mid-February, and it wasted no time in becoming a global sensation. The title topped weekly charts in dozens of territories, helping them make history in plenty of places where they had previously never ruled or where a South Korean act hadn’t ever made it to No. 1. It spun off a handful of hit singles, and it has continued to rack up noteworthy sales and streams every week since it was first shared…and it doesn’t seem like it’s about to disappear anytime soon.
