Business stalwart Ed Kelley to leave CPS Energy board; new trustee sought to guide utility

As CPS Energy’s most controversial board trustee enters the final months of his decade-long tenure, community and environmental organizers and elected officials are lining up candidates to take his place.

The person selected to replace Ed Kelley, who joined CPS’ five-member board in 2011, is likely to affect how much and how quickly the city-owned utility curbs its emissions — and how well it keeps utility bills affordable for San Antonio ratepayers.

Whoever it is, it’s unlikely he or she will be as outspoken as Kelley, a self-assured stalwart of San Antonio’s business community. Or as much as a lightning rod.
