Flubot mobile phone scam fuelling record money losses to scammers in Australia this year

A scam where phone users are sent fake text messages for a missed call or new voicemail in a bid to steal personal data is fuelling a significant rise in monetary losses in Australia.

In 2021, Australians have lost a record $211 million to scams so far, up from $175.6 million in the entire of last year, the federal government’s Scamwatch agency revealed on Monday.

Phone scams make up a significant portion of that, with $63.6 million lost by 110,000 people.

Scamwatch said the Flubot scam has been “particularly concerning”.

It works by sending a text message to both Android and iPhone users with an alert for a missed call or new voicemail.

Recently, scammers have been targeting phone users with purported information about a parcel.

Within this text message is a link to access a fake voicemail.
