How Political Will Cuomo’s High Court Appointments Be?

Law360 (May 5, 2021, 4:56 PM EDT) — The purported goal of the Commission on Judicial Nomination, the independent office selecting candidates for the New York Court of Appeals, is to limit the influx of politics in the judicial appointment process. Before the body was established in 1977 by a constitutional amendment, judges on the high court were elected.

While swapping out the old election-based appointment system has eliminated partisan furor from the nomination process, the new system is still imbued with politics, legal experts say.
