With the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq drawing down and with a renewed focus on great power competition with China and Russia, what will happen to U.S. capabilities for dealing with conflicts that occur in messy political-military environments? In this month’s People, Politics, and Prose, Ron Granieri will be joined by FPRI’s Michael Noonan to discuss his new book, Irregular Soldiers and Rebellious States. Granieri and Noonan will discuss how U.S. advisors and forces will still operate on a small-scale basis either by working with a foreign government to help defend it from threats of subversion and insurgency or by assisting insurgents and guerrilla forces in countering a hostile regime.
