Man looses nearly £4,000 in Twitter romance scam as figures for online dating fraud increase

New research from Which? reveals that victims of online romance scams have risen during lockdown with 7,500 reports of vulnerable and isolated people being targeted.

The consumer group’s analysis of Action Fraud data found romance scam reports were up by 40 per cent in the year leading up to April 2021, compared with the previous year.

John, aged 65, shared his encounter with a scammer with Which? and although his name has been changed to protect his identity, it’s hoped his story will spread awareness.

He said that he was cheated out of nearly £4,000 after meeting someone on Twitter after a scammer posed as a young woman, but eventually he discovered he was messaging a man in Nigeria.
