Metro Detroit homebuyers looking for outdoor oases to seal real estate deals
“Everyone’s attitudes of doom and gloom has turned into a desire to get out and experience life,” said Sue McFarland, an associate broker with RE/MAX Classic in Milford. “People may not yet feel comfortable traveling, but they want to be outside. … That’s why people want to make their backyards their retreats.”
McFarland, who has lived on a lake for more than three decades, sees the appeal. She also has noticed how fast her homes are selling when they offer impressive outdoor amenities. For example, her listing for a four-bedroom home on all-sports Lake Sherwood in Commerce Township sold for $810,000 with 22 showings in three days — that was more than $30,000 over the asking price. The home’s landscaping with custom-paver walkways and a pond with a waterfall was so lovely it was featured in a landscape magazine, McFarland said.
