Apple is expected to launch a number of new mini-LED equipped devices during 2021. On the tablet side of things an iPad Pro is expected to carry the stunning technology that offers deeper blacks, vibrant colours, and reduced power consumption.

Following the introduction of the ARM-powered M1 Apple Silicon, the higher tier 13-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro laptops are expected to ship with the new technology, and potentially a point upgrade to the processor with the M1X.

Into this mix comes a mini-LED MacBook Air.

Given the recent launch of the MacBook Air as one of the leading laptops in the first M1 wave, Apple will not want to ‘burn’ consumers with an immediate upgrade on the Air. Far better to take the MacBook Air screen to the next level at the next regular update.

With the latest leaked details from the supply chain, the new MacBook Air is expected to arrive in 2022.

This could speak to Apple’s planned upgrade cycle for the Mac line-up. Freed of the shackles of Intel’s roadmap, Tim Cook and his team can set their own tempo of releases. The move to an entirely ARM lineup of Macs is due to end in 2022; the obvious move once everything is switched over is to go back to the top and update the first generation M1 devices with the latest technology and all that Apple has learned following consumer feedback.

Shall we settle in for a two-year product cycle on the Mac platform?
