Key Facts

Haley launched the Stand for America PAC—named after a conservative advocacy group she already had in place.

A website for the PAC was already online Wednesday, soliciting donations and promising to back candidates that are “principled conservatives who will stand up for the ideas our country was founded on.”

Haley, 48, has for years been seen as a rising star in the Republican Party, and is now widely rumored, especially among media and political insiders, to make her first run for president in 2024.

She placed sixth in a Morning Consult/Politico 2024 Republican primary poll released Tuesday, being the preferred choice of 5% of respondents—well below President Donald Trump, who continues to hold a massive lead over the field with 42% of the vote, albeit a 12 percentage point drop from the 54% he had before the Capitol riots.

What To Watch For

The PAC has a more immediate goal than 2024 in mind, according to an email Haley sent to supporters Wednesday, promising the PAC will be “laser-focused on the 2022 midterms,” suggesting Haley will be endorsing candidates in the midterms. Democrats will soon control both chambers of Congress for the first time in over a decade.

Crucial Quote

“It’s more important than ever that we stand up for our founding ideas & American values. That means defending capitalism, protecting freedom, promoting religious liberty, & ensuring American security,” Haley said in a tweet Wednesday. “It’s why I launched Stand for America PAC.”

Key Background

Haley burst onto the national political scene in 2010, when she was elected governor of South Carolina at the age of 38, boosted by the historic feat that she was the first Indian-American to hold office in the state of South Carolina and one of the few non-white governors ever elected in the South. She easily won reelection in 2014 as her prominence increasingly grew, including being selected to deliver the Republican response to then-President Barack Obama’s State of the Union Address in 2016 and being named in the Time 100 that same year. Her second term was cut short when Trump tapped her to be the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, a post she held from Jan. 25, 2017-Dec. 31, 2018.

Tangent

Haley has openly broken with Trump in the past, but she has cast a wide gap between herself and the outgoing president as of late, reportedly telling Republican National Committee members last week that Trump’s “actions since Election Day will be judged harshly by history.”
