While most probably only see the mail couriers who drive delivery trucks, there are some couriers who deliver mail on foot with a pushcart like pictured above. The purpose of this fairly old mechanical device is to allow mail couriers to deliver mail and packages at the same time. Mail goes into one of those bags attached and packages go into the others. A mail carrier pushes this device with one hand, while holding magazines and mail in the other hand and needing to withdraw keys to open mailboxes and dig into the cart to retrieve and scan packages.
The set up is extremely uncomfortable and completely not ergonomic. Even worse if a carrier removes one of the satchels and places on his shoulder (can’t put the satchel across the body in case a dog attacks) from the pushcart and has the packages inside weighing down their body unevenly.
